Another day frittered away without accomplishing anything academic or being out and about soaking in the atmosphere as a carefree tourist. Pretty much the pattern for the past week. Today, however, was topped off by arriving at the theatre at ten of eight just in time to p[ick up my tickets for a show that turned out to have started at seven-thirty. So the past hour has been spent in the garden with the computer on my lap waiting for the moon to rise and putting together a basic outline for the paper.

One of my joys living in England is the church bells. My dorm is midway between the towers of Magdelin and Merton Chapels. Their clocks are slightly off, strike different quarter patterns and have rings of bells tuned somewhat differently. When they strike a long hour (such as 10:00 or 11:00) the effect is rather like “modern” classical music. Both rings of bells have good tone, though, unlike the bells of St. Mary Magdelin parish church which I heard on the unhappy walk back from the theatre this evening and which sound rather like tin pots -- no overtones and no sustain. Maybe they are just tiny bells that were muffled for ringing practice...or maybe they’re not Whitechapel bells. :)

Ahh, the moon is up. Full and dim and dusky red-orange. Time for bed, or at least an email check...
